PEM Tropics B CTC Page


Click on the PEM Tropics B calendar date to examine an enlarged (800x600) GIF image of the thumbnail. The enlarged GIF images range in size from 30 - 50 kB. The number below each image is the DC8 flight number, NOT the calendar date! This is provided to simply life for those who work in that co-ordinate system. Also, these CTCs have NOT been editted for the quality of the tropopause solution or for the accuracy of the temperature field. This will be done after final calibration of the radiometric data.

The color-coded temperature curtains (CTCs) display the temperature field (as represented by the color bar on the right) as a function of pressure altitude (km on left, kft on right) and Universal Time (in thousands of seconds). The tropopause solution is shown as a white trace, and the DC8 pressure altitude is shown as the black trace. A second black trace near the bottom of the plot illustrates the meridional region index (MRI), which varies from 0 in the tropics, to 1 at mid-latitudes, and a maximum value of 2 in polar regions. The MRI is related to how we blend our retrievals and is an indication of the type of air that the DC8 is flying in.For convenience, it is scaled to the the lowest most 2 km on the (left hand) pressure altitude scale. Obviously, it will be close to 0 for most of the PEM Tropics B flights.

Regarding the Use of these Images
The preliminary CTC images below are presented as an aid for other PEM Tropics B scientists to understand their data. They may not be used by non-PEM Tropics B individuals for any purpose, or referred to, without written permission from MJ Mahoney of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. For more information, go here.
