SOLVE DC-8 CTC Page

This page provides color-coded temperature curtains (CTCs) for the SOLVE DC-8 flights, as well as plots of the flight tracks. Click on the thumbnail images to examine an enlarged (800x600) PNG image of the thumbnail; click the flight number to see a plot of the flight track. The enlarged PNG images range in size from 30-50 kB. Although CTCs for an entire flight are very useful for understanding what happening on a synoptic scale, they do not use the MTP data at full resolution, and therefore do not adequately illustrate the mesoscale structure of the atmosphere. For comparison of MTP measurements to in situ and remote tracer measurements, full resolution MTP data should be used. We are currently preparing links to such data for cases where we clearly see mountain lee waves.
Use of This MTP Data
These images are presented here only as an aid for other scientists to understand their SOLVE data. It may not be used for any other purpose, or referred to, without written permission from MJ Mahoney of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. For more information, go here.

A Word About These Retrievals!

The MTP retrievals for Deployment #1 used retrieval coefficients which had not yet been optimized for this deployment, and a gain calibration which was revised in the second deployment. As a result, MTP temperature profiles are warmer than they should be away from the aircraft. The Deployment #1 data, including the archived MP files, will be revised in the near future.

Deployment #2 has a better gain calibration, but the retrieval coefficients were based upon RAOBs for this period in 1999. Because 1999 was warmer in the stratosphere than the current year, the retrievals are again biased warm. Sufficient RAOBs have now been collected for the current deployment to calculate new retrieval coefficients. When this is completed in the next few weeks, revised CTCs and MP-files will be submitted for both deployments.
